Alkoholitutkimussäätiöllä oli tutkimusyhteistyösopimus rahapelihaittojen tutkimuksesta Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitoksen kanssa vuosina 2016-2019. Pääasiallinen toimintatapa oli avoimilla hauilla jaettavat tutkimusapurahat, jotka julistettiin vuosittain avoimesti kaikkien haettaviksi. Saadut hakemukset arvioitiin tieteellisiin kriteereihin perustuen.
Tutkimustyöskentelyyn tarkoitettuja apurahoja jaettiin vuosina 2016-2019 yhteensä 796 147 euroa.
Rahoituksesta kohdistui Helsingin yliopistossa työskenteleville tutkijoille 39 %, Tampereen yliopistossa työskenteleville tutkijoille 29 %, Turun yliopistossa työskenteleville tutkijoille 21 % ja Itä-Suomen yliopistossa työskenteleville tutkijoille 7%; loput 4% kohdistui muualla työskenteleville tutkijoille.
